16) Stephen B. Welch, born July 9, 1849 according to the Welch family Bible (although the 1900 Hancock Co., TN census indicates he was born March 1845) and died September 22, 1930 in Hancock Co., TN. Stephen was five years old at the time of the 1850 Hancock Co., TN census. This is another example of the difficulties encountered when trying to establish facts from so many years ago. Stephen married Elizabeth Coffman on September 28, 1865 in Grainger Co., TN. Elizabeth was the daughter of Rhinehart Coffman and Sarah Beeler. She was born July 13, 1846 and died April 1, 1912 in Hancock Co., TN. Stephen and Elizabeth were included in the 1870 Hancock Co., TN census, District 14, Alanthus Hill.

Elizabeth stated in this census that she had seven children, four of whom were still living. The three children that died prior to 1900 were Rebecca Emily (died in 1887), Robert Tandy (died in 1891), and Lucinda Clementine (died in 1875 at the age of two months).
Stephen bought his sister, Millie (Welch) Widby's part of the Tandy Welch land (see Millie Welch for document). Along with his son, Morgan, Stephen bought his sister, Elizabeth (Welch) Beeler's part of the property (see Elizabeth Welch for document). Stephen and others sold four lots to his son, Morgan, in 1901.
Stephen built his home on his father's land near Powell River in Hancock Co., TN. A cemetery was started on the farm in 1912 when Elizabeth, his wife, was buried there. The cemetery is located on the north bank of Powell River between the Baldwin Ford and the Bartley Ford. In 1921, when Cecil Wolfe buried his wife, Alice, who was Stephen's niece, on his property that adjoined Stephen's site, the cemetery became known as the Wolfe-Welch Cemetery. When Cecil Wolfe sold his property to Irby Neal, he requested enough land be set aside at the cemetery so he could be buried beside his wife. It later became known as the Neal Cemetery, which it is sometimes called today. There are presently four generations of Welches buried there.

According to family tradition, her mother did not want Emily to marry the man to whom she was engaged and commented that she would rather see Emily dead than married to him. Emily contracted tuberculosis and died shortly afterward. |

It is sometimes spelled "Rinard" or "Rynard." His death certificate states that he was born in Grainger Co., TN. He is buried in the Wolfe-Welch Cemetery in Hancock Co., TN.
